31 Nights of Halloween Horror: Part 7 in a 31 part series. Join me for 31 days of horror reviews in the month of October. Every day we’ll take a look at a different horror film, some old and some new. Today we’re talking about:
Dir. Jon Wright
2012 – Ireland
OK so far we have talked about cannibals, body modification, possession, killer cults and telepathic nightmares. Now how about we discuss an old fashioned monster movie from a place not not really known for their out pouring of horror films? Ireland! A place more associated with their out pouring of alcohol, this Irish monster movie successfully combines the two.
Lisa Nolan a police officer from the mainland volunteers for two weeks of police work on a remote island off the coast of Ireland. She is partnered with alcoholic Ciarán O’Shea, who is the exact opposite of her in every way. After investigating the strange occurrence of some mutilated whales washed up on the beach they soon realize that there is more going on then they originally expected. Turns out they are under attack by some strange tentacled blood-sucking creatures from outer space that Paddy, the town drunk, who also discovered them, calls “Grabbers”. After some discoveries made on the creatures they learn these tentacled atrocities need two things to survive, blood and water. When Paddy and O’Shea are both attacked by the creatures but not killed like the others, they come to the realization that both of their blood alcohol levels are so high that their blood is like poison to the creatures. With the creatures’ eggs hatching and a huge rain storm heading their way, they decide to get every own in town over to the local pub and get them all piss drunk for their own protection.
So yeah the premise of this film sounds pretty ridiculous and it is a horror comedy in a sense, but really the movie is played straight. There are no outright jokes throughout the whole thing, most of the silliness comes when everyone is getting shit-faced. There are some tense scenes through out and plenty of monster footage to keep things moving along at a good pace. Little bits of gore mostly in heads being decapitated and flung around. When you think about it, what would happen if something that needed blood to survive like a leech or a mosquito or even a vampire attacked some one who was hitting the sauce all night, would they be infected? Want to see something new and have a few laughs? Check out this flick, it is well acted and the FX are all good and not some bad CGI SyFy monster movie type as one might expect. Try and keep up with all the drinking that goes on this movie and see where you end up by the finale. Speaking of which, this one is nothing to write home about and you can pretty much see where it is going very early on. The movie is pretty straight forward and by the books, but it is still a fun monster movie to watch and we really don’t seem to get too many of them anymore. So pour a pint, raise it high and toast to tonight’s Halloween Horror movie, Grabbers.
