There has been conversation recently about the aspects in our lives that make some people geeks, and others not- even though when you think about it we are really doing the same things for something we love; we just happen to be interested in different stuff from one another. Below are just 5 reasons why I think that sports fans are some of the best geeks, and cosplayers around (even if they don’t know it yet).
1. They know how to paint themselves for the game.
Not only do sports fans go wild with face paint, often they include body paint into their look as well, and they definitely get into character! Yeah, we know, face paint has been fun since we were kids, it’s still pretty damn fun. It really helps you get into the moment and escape reality for a while. While some people go for the ‘less’ detailed and ‘simpler’ painting a letter on your chest with a group of friends to spell something out, some people really go all out and get into great detail to look like the mascot.
It definitely doesn’t stop with face paint for many of these folks. Sure they may be considered more of a ‘super fan’ then your average joe, but of course there are different levels of cosplay as well! But in a crowd of potentially tens of thousands no one is looking at these dressed up fans as getting too extreme (unless they’re fans for the opposing team). They sure as heck don’t shy down from the challenge of being more spirited then anyone else. Countless hours and dollars are thrown into these costumes that are worn maybe a few times, if they’re lucky to go to enough important games.
3. They avidly collect memorabilia of their favorite teams.
While many fans don’t have full rooms dedicated to just one team, I know families with the ‘sports’ room, or man cave, that have pennants hanging, autographed items displayed, and pictured around with famous players. They even collect cards with players on them, their stats, and a bio about them. They trade them, spend so much on packs that MAY contain their favorite new card, and pay extreme prices for the rare cards that are basically impossible to find. Sound familiar?
4. They play fantasy versions of their favorite sports.
I have tried to play fantasy football before. It went way over my head. But the dedication a sports fan has to his fantasy team is not unlike the dedication a dungeon master feels for D&D, or a LARP-er feels during an event. Trying to play the best team, focusing all of your energy to learn and strengthen your team by trading players, this is the heart of any fantasy world! Allowing yourself to get lost in a pretend setup through the act of play, we play in different ways- but we all play! Real life is hard, and it’s almost like some of these athletes have ‘super human’ powers because of their skill and talent for the sport, so why NOT play hours of video games, and fantasy leagues about these super people!
5. They don’t let anyone stop them from loving their team.
There are signs, forums, people shouting on the streets about both their favorite, and most hated teams. A fan will even get enraged if you mistake their fandom for another team. No matter how many times they lose, or the bad press that follows a player on their team, they still continue to support and love them. Just like how no matter the number of terrible movies they make about our favorite characters, we keep loving and continuing to support them.
Have you ever felt resentment towards a sports fan because they get to rep their favorite teams easily without being judged? Just remember many of these sports fans don’t feel confident enough to rep or talk about their teams sometimes too. Fellow ‘geek’ enthusiasts maybe it’s time we take a note from these enthusiasts and stop caring what people think. Though I won’t ever recommend going for a stroll in Boston with a NY Yankees Jersey on.
