Count me into the crowd of n00b’s that know NOTHING much at all about Doctor Strange.
I never read the comics or really understood what he is supposed to be in relation to the Marvel world. I’m sure many geeks on this site can fill me in though.
When it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch and Marvel were teaming up to add this character to the third wave of films from the studio, I was intrigued. Most of the Marvel films are very good and entertaining. Some are way better (Iron Man 1 & 3, Captain America, Avengers) than others ( I’m looking at you Thor!) but there is a general sense of samey-ness with a lot of these films. Guardians of the Galaxy was really a standout movie in this lineup because it felt, well, so much more fresh than some of the other costumed hero films we watched recently. With Doctor Strange, I think Marvel might be headed for another interesting comic book film, like GotG was.
Over at the Wrap they revealed that Rachel McAdams will be joining the cast in the new cinematic outing for one of the more secondary Marvel properties. It’s an interesting choice too as she is coming off the controversial True Detective season 2. Mostly she has been kicking around in Rom-Com’s like Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paradise recently. This along with True Detective gives her an edginess now.
Since I have zero idea what the role will be I can only assume it’s gotta be more interesting than just “the girlfriend”, at least it should be because she is better than that as far as talent goes. Marvel recently said that many of their films will no longer be origin stories, that means Doctor Strange will begin with him being Doctor Strange. That is a great idea! I have become so bored seeing the origin stories anymore. The movies are always better when the character is in full swing, as it were. Along side such talent as Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor, this should prove to be one of the more unique Marvel films yet.
Doctor Strange hits theaters in November 4th 2016.
