Filming begins on Harry Potter spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

I’m not the biggest Potter-head in the world, but even I was stoked by Warner Brother’s announcement today that filming had begun on the first of the hotly-anticipated Harry Potter spinoffs Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

"...The amusing creatures described hereafter are fictional and cannot hurt you."
“…The amusing creatures described hereafter are fictional and cannot hurt you.”

The movie is based on a fictional tome mentioned several times during the series, and later turned into a short booklet by J.K. Rowling to benefit British charity Comic Relief.

The movie will follow the adventures of the book’s fictional author, Newt Scamander, as he scours the earth during the 1920s searching high and low for mythical beasts to include in his book.

Little is known beyond that, apart from the fact that British actor Eddie Redmayne has been tipped to play Scamander.

Today’s announcement added few clues – just the name of just one more cast member, Samantha Morten, in the role of ‘Mary Lou’.

The movie is set to hit the cinema in November 2016 – and for Potter fans starved of new material since 2011’s Death Hallows Part 2, that can’t come soon enough!

Update: Be sure and also check out our writer Maddie’s short review of the book and how it may fare as a film.

  • I’m hoping that they treat this as a light, one-off movie. If they try to bake in a 3-part epic storyline it will be… predictable. But, man. If they do this right it would be incredible. I’m thinking Indiana Jones meets Potter by way of PG Wodehouse.

If they try to make it 3 movies I will cry…

      • Toby Wan-Kenobi

oh boy, I hate to be the one to say this, but they already have an agreement to make this a 3 part series.

        • (facepalm)

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? HOW WHEN WHERE AND WHY? I mean they will have to go completely out of the book (which I just finished reading and it’s basically an A-Z of all of the fantastic beasts) and make up the authors life travels… Is that the point, so make a completely new storyline? Do we know if it’s just the fantastic beasts that will be supporting the storyline? Or will they be pulling from all of the ‘side’ projects, because there is also Tales of beedle the bard, and quidditch throughout the ages, and I guess if they were doing one movie per book MAYBE I can understand.

Everything I’ve been reading has said that it’s a trilogy, all written by Rowling and all will be centered around the life and adventures of Newt Scamander and Porpentina. I have some very reliable sources, one being the internet, the other being my teenage daughter…like I said, reliable sources. What would be cool is if they did theTales of Beedle the Bard as a movie.

          • MacAdie Ferguson

Yeah, I would love the Tales of Beedle the Bard as its own entity, I am nervous and sad to hear that they are making a trilogy of Newt’s travels. While I think it will be a great story, it feels like a ONE movie storyline. Because really all this fine gent was doing was going out and discovering new species… How can that idea hold up a trilogy? I guess we shall see.

          • Toby Wan-Kenobi

yes we shall. I think it will be interesting to see if Rowling/Yates can pull it all together. I have hope though, I do have hope.
