Garbage Returns and is Feeling ‘EMPTY’

In the music business if a band can last 20 years together that is quite an accomplishment. Garbage did just that and is still going strong.

Returning to the studio after the successful ’20 Years Queer’ tour last year promoting the 20th anniversary of the band and first studio album, Garbage returns with a new single and forthcoming album in June!

The new single “Empty” off the record ‘Strange Little Birds’ is the 6th from the band and they describe it as their ‘least fussed with’ production yet. The members are notorious for wanting to lay too many computer effects, samples, and actual takes while in post production. There have been many delays in between albums because of the time consuming process this takes. This time the band are going for a more simple sound focusing on what they do best without all the extra sound design. The result sounds more like the band you hear in concert, which is excellent.

The new clip was directed by Sam Bayer who directed the band’s first ever video for ‘Vow‘ back in the mid 90’s. The images are dizzying, a dark alternative candy colored dream, a glorious return to form.

Shirley’s pink hair with her commanding presence takes center stage in the video. I love videos like this, simple concepts, beautifully lit and shot, showcasing the band and what they look and sound like. Simple and effective.

The song is terrific and while it’s a shame they will never get radio or any kind of popular push from this they seem to be content with that. They make music on their own terms now and are truly independent of the big studios. In 2012 Garbage started releasing albums on their own label STUNVOLUME. That brings a lot of freedom like being able to manage your music, tours and videos anyway you want.

Garbage’s new album drops June 10th on CD, Digital Download and Vinyl. Go see Garbage on tour throughout Summer 2016!

Doug L. Doug is a lifelong film enthusiast and like a lot of others from that generation can trace it back to when he saw Star Wars as a kid in 1977 for the first time. He spent a good part of his formative years working in video stores jockeying VHS tapes across the counter. Doug genuinely enjoy movies in an irony-free way and love all kinds of films from the Arthouse to the Grindhouse. If anyone is going to take movies too seriously around here, it's gonna be him.
