What in God’s name is this? What have I just watched? This teaser is only a minute long but I feel like I’ve been sucked into a lifetime commitment. It’s truly insane and unlike anything I’ve personally ever seen before. I’d say they were trying too hard to push the weirdness envelope, which so many trailers seem to do for movies like this, but it’s definitely unique. I’ll give them that.

Warning, this is not safe for anywhere.

Seriously did you just watch that? There’s no preparing for that.

Apparently this film premiered at the last Sundance and was positively reviewed enough to get picked up for distribution. IndieWire says, “If ‘Barton Fink’ was made by John Waters, this is the sort of movie he’d write.” Well shit. I’m in.

I tried not to read too much of their review. If you’re anything like me, a movie like this leaves you fascinated, and I can’t have anyone ruining that fascination.

They do go on to give it praise for being truly weird, and they say “there’s a real pleasure in having a new event movie for the truly weird at heart.” I trust the good folks at IndieWire, so I imagine we’re looking at a new cult favorite here, and that could be a really good thing.

If you want a summary of the plot (and I’m sorry, but I don’t) you can get that on the IMDB page.

The Greasy Strangler opens in select theaters and on VOD on October 7th.
