Adding to the recent blows to Netflix, Hulu launched a huge campaign today to get the word out that they will now be offering ad free subscription plans for just $4 more a month ($11.99/month). There are some caveats. Do to licensing agreements SOME content will still have pre-roll commercials even under this new plan, and if you don’t want to spend the $4 more a month you can stick with the old plan at $7.99 still.
But hey, they definitely heard people. I was one of them. I quit Hulu a year ago due entirely to the ads. They know this and that’s exactly why they started this new pricing plan and sent out this email this morning to all us cancelers:
One curious thing that I’ve seen no one talk about is that in the email it says “*13.99/month for sign-ups through IOS.” This isn’t even mentioned on the official landing page for the new plan. I’m not sure why this would be. We’ll update the story once we figure it out.
So what do you think? Is this too little too late for Hulu? Or is this another nail in the coffin for Netflix? I seriously doubt the latter, but it could get people to come back to Hulu, that’s for sure.
