This weekend at NYCC they promoted and released the trailer for John Wick: Chapter 2.
Let me tell you the first John Wick was such a surprise for me. I did not expect it to be as good as it was.
John Wick felt like a throwback to the kinds of action movies they made back in the 80’s or early 90’s. The look, the feel, the movement of the whole piece made it seem like it came from another era. Keanu Reeves always made a decent action star, I still love the 90’s fun of Speed or Point Break. Here though is a part where it seems like he found his John McClane role. The one that transformed him from one thing to something else entirely. He looks and sounds more mature, and dammit he looks great for 50!
The movie just oozes style in all aspects from the suits Wick wears, the car he drives, to specifically the action. The fight choreography is amazing. Directed by stuntmen, you can see where they understand how to move the actors and the camera so you never lose your place. It truly is a tremendous piece of work for first timers behind the lens. The ‘Gun-Fu‘ action style ups the ante on what John Woo created in The Killer and Hard Boiled and adds even more to it.
They even managed to create this realistic alternate world that sort of looks like our own but has a few quirks like where hitmen all can go to one hotel to hide out and recharge from their work. All while palling around with other hitmen. It’s certainly an odd conceit for the film that feels realistic yet dances into the almost cartoonish world of an action movie.
This movie is eminently watchable and suitable for repeat viewings which I have done.
So what is the sequel? I do not really know much about that at all at this point. You can look online and probably find spoilers for it. I put the trailer below so you can have a look. At the very least the world has opened up for John Wick with European locations in play. Some of the greatest suit makers in the world can be found in Italy. Just a hunch, but I can just tell you from the looks of the images released so far, we are going back into that awesome, cool world.
And also he has his dog. That is key.
