Looks like LAIKA film studio is working on what I can only hope will be the next gem in a recent stream of WINNER movies. Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014) and coming August 19th Kubo and the Two Strings. While these ‘kids’ films haven’t always received the credit they deserve I can tell from the trailer that I personally will enjoy this movie!
Maybe the reason why these films are overlooked is because the topics within these animated pictures are very adult topics, approached through the viewpoint of a child hero/heroine. The loss, fear, loneliness these main characters feel are never masked, but embraced into the story lines, showing how beautiful a struggle can turn out to be if you just work through them. They’ve got a reputation to be ‘darker’ children’s movies, which they most certainly are in comparison to the minions from Despicable Me, but it doesn’t make them any less wonderful in my mind!
Director Travis Knight is no newbie to this style of animation, having been on the animation teams for all of the flicks previously listed, and it’s apparent from this 2 minute trailer that there will absolutely be that typical LAIKA ‘darkness’ incorporated into Kubo and the Two Strings.
I have a feeling this will be one of those movies that parents will actually ENJOY seeing with their kids, if not even more than their kids!
