I have to say, the Muppets had a very real impact on my life. I have the most wonderful memories of the original show and movies, which weren’t all winners for me but their connection to my childhood, and deep rooted love I have for these characters has kept me going. Now it’s to the point where I won’t even watch the movies in public because I know they’re going to tear at my heartstrings and I’m going to cry like a baby through basically the whole thing.
It’s all about nostalgia for me, and I know this isn’t always a good thing. It’s easy to think “well this new muppet fad is great because it’s bringing them back into the public’s eye.” But is it really a good thing? Think about what made you connect with the Muppets from the beginning.
I know I am about to sound like a hippie, and maybe I am one, but it was all about the love for me. On the original show there was turmoil, and conflict, but it always ended solved with love- love of the music, love for eachother, love of being a muppet and entertaining. I was always enamored by how funny it was to watch these characters pretending to be real in their real world but actually being puppets and not often having to face the concerns of actual Hollywood. But it seems now that is how they are promoting the new Muppets show, pushing these loving childhood friends of mine into the very real gossipy spotlight.
I’m over it.
Kermit and Miss Piggy are being used as props to try to revitalize the franchise, but in doing it this way they are damaging the initial integrity of the characters. Yesterday an article for the New York Daily News was written and it says this in reference to Kermit “since then, photos surfaced of that green pond scum with his new pig of a girlfriend, Denise, an ABC marketing executive.” It hurts my heart to read Kermit being called ‘that green pond scum’, that’s not how I ever expected children to think of a muppet, and I sincerely think that if you asked any young person about the muppets they’d only know about this current gossip mess.
Let’s bring back some rainbow connection, the real feels we all felt for these characters, and stop pushing them to be something they’re not. They’re not about cheap press through gossip.
