It was announced today that a brand new TV series for Star Trek will be headed our way in 2017!
CBS dropped a press release indicating the show would be created under Alex Kurtzamn’s watch who has been a part of the latest big screen incarnations of Star Trek. The show is set to debut on CBS TV but then will be available thru the CBS digital service known as ‘all access’ which will be a $5.99/month streaming service allowing access to all of CBS TV.
The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.
The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.
The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
No other details have been given about what the story line is or where it takes place in relation to the current movies. I kind of hope its set in same universe timeline and but I doubt we see the movie characters play off the TV characters all that much, if any. The next film, ‘Star Trek Beyond’ is already in post production and set to launch next summer 2016 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Star Trek!
It has been a while since we saw a Trek related TV show so maybe now is the time for a return to a regular series. I only ever got into Star Trek: TOS and then later with The Next Generation and lost track of the rest of the TV shows. I would love to see it come back if they can have the quality we get from a TV series like Breaking Bad, Mad Men or Walking Dead. There is plenty of room now to to come up with new ideas and characters and truly take us to places where “no one has gone before”.
Live long and prosper!
