Fox officially announced the release date and the synopsis of the new film from Ridley Scott which ties Prometheus into Alien now, in a much more overt and fuller way.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS — and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

No Noomi Rapace? How far into the timeline are we past the events of Prometheus?

What is interesting is how much Scott wants to take back control of the Alien series now after having walked away from it over 30 years ago. He has publicly stated his interest in shepherding the series back into itself. Prometheus had a lot of great ideas and some not so great ones, it will be interesting to see where he is going with this and how it backs into his 1979 Alien.

On a side note, the video game series Halo took a lot of visual design work from the Alien series, particularly ALIENS. One of the major enemies in the Halo universe is called The Covenant. I wonder if these two properties are winking knowingly at each other!

Alien Covenant to be released October 6, 2017!

Doug L. Doug is a lifelong film enthusiast and like a lot of others from that generation can trace it back to when he saw Star Wars as a kid in 1977 for the first time. He spent a good part of his formative years working in video stores jockeying VHS tapes across the counter. Doug genuinely enjoy movies in an irony-free way and love all kinds of films from the Arthouse to the Grindhouse. If anyone is going to take movies too seriously around here, it's gonna be him.
