There Will Be a ‘Midnight Special’ in March 2016

Popping on my radar this week is this little film from Jeff Nicholscalled Midnight Special. I have not heard much about it until now and I have to say it sounds really good. The poster made it’s debut and I have to admit it’s a good poster and done the job of piquing my curiosity.

The film has a terrific cast including  Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, and Adam Driver. The director opened up about the film a little bit recently and said Shannon plays father to the boy in the film.

“The son happens to have unique gifts,” Nichols said. “It’s a weird word to use, but his gifts are, um, supernatural. ‘Close Encounters Of The Third Kind,’ ‘E.T.’, ‘Starman,’ they were my inspirations – very propulsive journeys that work when you can’t predict what’s going to happen next. This is my sci-fi chase film.”

Starman, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, and E.T. All terrific movies and all about some kind of alien in pursuit or trying to get back home, with the Feds and all kinds of people hot on the trail. Those movies are all so terrific and such a huge part of the 80’s, referencing these movies has just moved this film up on my must see list for 2016.

I wonder what Mr. Nichols has up his sleeve.

Doug L. Doug is a lifelong film enthusiast and like a lot of others from that generation can trace it back to when he saw Star Wars as a kid in 1977 for the first time. He spent a good part of his formative years working in video stores jockeying VHS tapes across the counter. Doug genuinely enjoy movies in an irony-free way and love all kinds of films from the Arthouse to the Grindhouse. If anyone is going to take movies too seriously around here, it's gonna be him.
